Domains and DNS in plain language

A domain is your project’s address. DNS records connect it to your website, email and other services. The business owner should control the registration.

Choosing and owning a domain

Choose a short, readable name. Check naming rights and domain history. Keep registrar access, an up-to-date owner email address and two-factor authentication.

Essential records

A and AAAA records point to IP addresses, CNAME provides an alias and MX identifies mail servers. TXT records support verification, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Check each record’s purpose before removing it.

Moving without losing email

Copy all required records before changing DNS. Lower TTL in advance, prepare the new server and test the site before switching. Cached records mean changes become visible gradually.

Do not miss renewal

Enable reminders and automatic renewal, and check account balance and owner contacts. Losing the domain affects both your website and business email.
